Family photography sessions are honestly some of my favorites to shoot- take one look at my family portfolio, and you’ll see why! I just think families deserve to be celebrated and documented and I’m honored every time a family chooses me. That’s why I’m sharing my favorite family photo ideas with you. A quick peek into how I work with families of all sizes and and how those real and authentic moments for my families.
But, not every photographer can capture real, genuine moments that show a families during family photoshoots. It takes practice- and a plan! In my 14+ years of photographing Boca Raton families I’ve come up with a list of family photo ideas and prompts I actually use when kids are wild, shy, silly, tired, or just done.
Outdoor Family Photo Ideas
During my outdoor family photoshoots I’m always focusing on what prompts and poses we can try to make everyone feel the most comfortable from the start. This way I can give each family the most variety in their proof galleries. When families arrive I start off with any one of these prompts right away!
Follow the Leader Family Pose
I like to include a follow the leader prompt during my family photoshoots. It is an easy way to have the family interact and take the focus off me.
I instruct them to “hold hands like elephants hold each others tails” with mom leading the way. I then tell them to just talk to each other and don’t look at me. I love the imagery of mom leading her family.

Hold Hands and Walk Famliy Poses
Again, a favorite prompt is to just hold hands and walk. I guide them to not look at me, look at eachother, make jokes, tell eachother what you had for lunch, where you want to go for dinner. Every single time, they end up smiling and laughing. I get an awkward look at first when I tell them to hold hands and walk but it is always a favorite image.

Run and Hug Mom and Dad Poses
This is a really fun prompt I love to give the kids. We make a game out of it where I huddle with the kids were mom and dad can’t hear and tell them when I count to three, run fast and hug mom and dad.
I love the smilies on the parents face and seeing the little ones with their arms outstretched is so sweet. The kids love to “surprise” their parents. So much fun!
I like to make sure parents have simple play tasks with their children to make the family interaction more natural. This is a real favorite of mine too.
I know this is a guaranteed fun and easy prompt. I have parents hold their childs hands and swing. It is a great way to get real and happy smiles from my toddlers AND their parents.

Fly Like an Airplane Pose
Another trick I like to use to distract and get natural reactions from little ones is to have mom or dad or even both hold baby on their belly and fly like an airplane. This is usually something they have already done with their parents so they are comfortable and it is fun.
Oh, one key thing about my sessions, you will often be getting in some excercise as well.

Swing your Toddler in the Air Poses
I always imagine the tickle in the tummy my little clients get when I prompt mom and dad to swing baby in the air. This is one of my most used family photo ideas. We had an unusually chilly and windy evening at the beach for this session but baby was still happy. I actually loved the layering of her sweater. Having them a little off center in the frame give a bit of extra interest to the photo.

Dad’s Shoulders Pose for Family Photo Ideas
I can almost guarantee a good shot when I have dad put a toddler on their shoulders. I will ask first if it is something the toddler has done before. I then have dad start moving and shaking to get the giggles going. This is another way I like to make sure my sessions are fun and create their own memory, not just be a chore to be done.

A Quiet Hug Pose
I like to find a still quiet moment in between the high energy of encouraging fun and smiles.
Just a moment to connect softly. In these moments, I do no talking, and do not give prompts. No need.

Classic Family Photo Ideas
Standing Together Looking at the Camera
I like to start with a more traditional pose with everyone looking at the camera. It is the most simple family photo ideas I use. I make sure I have at least one more formal portrait before I get into the more fly on the wall moments which is what I really love to capture.

Sitting and Cuddled Up
I can’t pass up a chance to get a family to cuddle up. I usually do the seated images towards the end of the session. We are about 30-45 minutes into the session so they are loosened up and ready to relax. I just this this is adorable. We are heading into blue hour and winding down and the skies are just gorgeous.

Kids Kissing Parents Family Photo Ideas
Little ones are always happy to give mom a kiss. This is a memory mom never wants to forget so I always try to add these poses into my outdoor family photo sessions.

Parents Together
It has probably been awhile since parents have had their portrait taken alone, as a couple so I make sure we grab a few. A quick prompt I like to use is to have dad wrap his arms around mom and snuggle in her neck. This always does the trick. I just love to see the sparks fly!

Don’t Forget the Family Dog!
A well trained, behaved pet is always welcome at my sessions. I am a huge dog lover and they always add that extra sprinkle of love.
Before we move forward with including your dog in your family photos we need to take a few extra steps. It is helpful if you bring another friend or family member to care for the dog when they are not in the photos and we also need to make sure they permitted at our location.

A couple of bonus outdoor family photo ideas include incorporating your pets and using location features like stairs, pathways, and hidden corners to add variety to your images.
Prompts & Family Photo Ideas
The Smash Together Pose
This pose is my favorite and might even becoming my signature. These clients coined this pose the “Greenwood Smash”. They have been coming to me for years and every year I give the same prompt, stand holding hands and spread all the way out, when I count to three, smush in together as close as you can and tickle.
Most of my prompts are intended to get everyone snuggled up close and have fun.
And here you have it, the Greenwood Smash. You can’t take yourself too seriously at my sessions I am afraid!

This was shot right after the kids pulled in the parents as hard as they could. Capturing a family just having fun and laughing with each other is a must for me. This is a great idea for family of four poses for pictures.
Happy Face Prompt for Authentic Family Smiles
Stay with me here, I know it is random, but I give the prompt for them to look at me and give me a “happy face”. I don’t say “smile” and I absolutely don’t say “cheese”.
Pro-tip – asking the family to give me a happy face throws them off enough to make a real expressions happen. Love it!

Tickle Fight for Playful Family Images
I can’t think of anything easier to get kids to laugh than have mom and dad start a tickle fight. It is a great time for me to just move in close and get the kids laughter. It is also a great shot from a distance capturing the whole family giggling. These are a client favorite image for sure.

Daddy Sneak Attack for Joyful Photos
I have heard a time or two that dad’s aren’t very excited when they hear mom has booked a family photoshoot. I am ready and make sure dad ends up thanking mom by the end of our session.
I make sure to get them in on the fun, even if it does require a bit of muscle power. I tell the kids to stand in front of me then have dad sneak up from behind them and scoop them up and run off. The kids LOVE it! I think dad does too.

Peek-a-boo Game Prompt
This shot is so much fun for kids! Especially siblings! When I choose locations I am always looking for ways to incorporate our environment (while being respectful of it of course).
When I see amazing details like these ginormous leaves, I knew I had to use them. The boys loved them and a game of peek-a-boo gave us an entire adorable series of photos.

Dad Holds ALL the Kiddo Prompt
I love having all the kids pile on dad. It may require him to use a few muscles but the kids love it. I will take this photo with just dad and kids then I will have mom join in for a family moment.

Holding Toddler Upside Down Photo
I am always prepared for a pivot during family photos. I have a pretty big roster of family photo ideas so I can always get that perfect shot. Our three year old little girl needed a change of pace during their family pics. So what did we do? I decided to take her photo in the way she was the most happy. Mom held her upside down and then I made funny noises. The results? I got an adorable family shot with everyone looking at the camera!

Family Photo Ideas with Siblings
Big Sister Solo Ideas
Absolutely I am going to grab a few individual shots of each child at an outdoor family session. This sweet girl has had a big personality ever since I met her at her newborn session. I reallly love to give each child a moment to show me their own personality and just be themselves.

Capturing each kiddo by themself is always super important to me. Makes it easy for mom to complete her gallery wall of family portraits.

Little Brother Solo Ideas
When I’m planning for family of 4 poses, I always make sure each kiddo has their own individual shot.

Siblings Together Ideas
Moms always love shots of their kiddos together, so we always keep this as a go to shot. I’ve known these kids for 8 years now, and its easy to see how close they are.

I always get those yuck faces when I tell siblings to snuggle up together for their photos but it always turns into moments like this! Now, I will be honest, it might be a brief moment, but as long as I capture it with my super fast camera we are all good.

One of my sibling family photo ideas is to start with having a bigger sibling stand behind the little and hug them. Then I might tell them to stand next to eachother and knock into eachother gently and then they start naturally interacting. That is how this sweet moment happened.
Shy Baby Pose Idea
I call this the Shy Baby shot because I’ve had plenty of sessions where baby was just not loving photos. In this case at just one year old, baby had a little stranger danger. Parents always worry about this, but I can’t tell you how many times this pose has saved the day! (Parents Face Each Other)
Here I prompted mom and dad to face each other and interact with baby. And then I positioned myself behind baby so she couldnt see me. This way, baby is distracted by mom and dad, but I am still getting a super cute shot.

One-on-One Family Photo Ideas
I like to start with a more traditional pose with everyone looking at the camera. It is the most simple family photo ideas I use. I make sure I have at least one more formal portrait before I get into the more fly on the wall moments which is what I really love to capture.
Mom with Each Child
Even when shooting a family of four, its always so important to for me to take time for just mom and her kiddos. For moms, all she wants is beautiful portraits with her sweet kids!

Just by me giving the simple suggestion for mom to hold her hand and twirl made a great memory of the night for them both and I got to see it all behind my camera.

Dad with Each Child
And same goes for Dads, too! These kids will be grown before you know it. Having special shots with each of his kids is always important for Dad.

Parents Squat to Child Level
We’ve got a case of the giggles and I am loving every minute of it!
Having parents squat down to their kids level is a great prompt to change up perspective. The girls loved “attacking” mom with hugs and kisses.

Family Beach Photo Ideas
Of all the locations I’m asked about for South Florida family photos, the beach is easily the most requested by both local families and vacationers. Since we’re on the east coast, if you want the sun rising over the ocean, you will need to book a sunrise session. Sunrise comes with real-life benefits: no crowds, cooler temperatures, and happier little ones. Most babies are already up early anyway, and once we’re finished, you still have the entire day ahead of you to enjoy your time together.
Family Photo Ideas for Walking Along the Shoreline
What could be easier than a walk along the beach? I simply guide the family to hold hands, talk and don’t look at me. The perfect prompt for me to give my families at their family photoshoot like this one in Deerfield Beach.

Beach Blanket Cuddle for Cozy Family Portraits
Having the kids seated and snuggled and all wrapped up, such an adorable shot and the perfect prop after a messy and wet playtime at the beach. One of my go to family photo ideas to make it fun and add variety. These two sisters had so much fun.

Pose Family on Stairs
Stairs are a great location to pose a family. It provides natural layers for placing a family and give a little extra interest to the photo. I can stagger a family vertically on different steps or have everyone sitting next to eachother on the same step.
I especially like to use these beach stairs for the color and texture.

Sand Run and Wave Crash Hug for Connection
All of my young clients love when I tell them they get to actually RUN at their session. At this session I had the kids sprint in the frame of the photo right into the arms of a waiting mom and dad. I stand behind the kids with the parents ahead of them. Then I give them a countdown to run and give their biggest hugs to mom and dad.

Family Photo Ideas by Family Size
Family Photo Poses for 3
A family of 3 is a special time. I was so tickled when baby grabbed moms face for a kiss in this photo. I will often direct parents to hold the baby facing out so when they are holding them I can see their adorable face.
I can’t think of anything more natural than baby kisses.

I would like to say I directed this family of three to this pose but it just happened. Once dad was holding baby, mom immediately took her opportunity to shower baby in kisses.

Family Photo Poses for 4
A family of four gives us endless poses. Each parent cuddling one child or both children or siblings cuddling like in this photo.

Family Photo Poses for 5
Family Christmas Photo Ideas
Use your Surroundings to Capture the Season
I’ve never been one to have clients stand in front of a holiday set and take stiff, posed Christmas photos. I’m much more about creating natural moments and real memories. I do love using the season around us in a subtle way. I saw this wreath and new it was the perfect holiday touch. I gave my fun family the usual prompts to create natural laughter and smiles but the wreath in the background was the perfect holiday cherry on top!

Tips for a Successful Family Photoshoot
A family photoshoot should be low stress and fun for everyone involved! It’s really just about enjoying your kids, loving on your people, and letting real moments happen naturally. But real quick- one of the biggest tips? Keep it fun! Things like walking together, tickling the kids, swinging your toddler in the air, letting siblings be themselves, and snuggling in close will bring out the best shots.
When to Schedule Your Family Photoshoot
I have found the sweet spot for most outdoor family photoshoots is either early morning or close to sunset.
The reason I like this timeline is that the light is softer, the temperatures are usually more comfortable, and little ones are not squinting in harsh midday sun. This is especially important for South Florida family photos where the heat and humidity can be a lot, even during the prettier months.
If we are planning beach family photos, I usually recommend sunrise. Since we are on the east coast, sunrise gives us that beautiful light coming up over the ocean, fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and usually happier little ones who are already up early anyway.
Ultimately, the best time I want you to schedule is when your kids are usually at their happiest. Pretty light matters, but happy kids matter more, and I can always adjust the location, pacing, and prompts based on your family that day.
What to Bring to Your Family Photo Session
I do encourage keeping things simple because remember, the goal is for this to feel fun and easy, not like you packed for a week long vacation!
You don’t need to overpack, but a few useful items can make your session more comfortable. Here are a few things I recommend to bring:
- Water – Especially for outdoor family photos in South Florida.
- Small snacks – Quick, non-messy snacks can help if little ones need a reset.
- Wipes – Always helpful for faces, hands, and surprise messes.
- Backup clothes – Especially for toddlers, babies, or beach sessions.
- Comfortable shoes – Helpful if we are walking between photo spots.
- A favorite small toy or lovey – This can help shy kids warm up.
If your dog is joining your family photos, bringing a leash, water, treats, and an extra person to help with your pet can also be really helpful.
How to Choose the Best Location for Your Family Photoshoot
The right location sets the tone for your entire session. When deciding where to shoot, I always consider three main things:
- Light: Soft, even light is ideal. I look for open shade, filtered sunlight, or golden-hour light to create flattering images without harsh shadows or squinty eyes.
- Space: Kids need room to move, play, run, snuggle, and be themselves. I love locations that give us space for both playful prompts and classic family portraits.
- Variety: I look for locations with pretty details like pathways, trees, stairs, beach access, foliage, or little tucked-away spots so your gallery feels full and not like every photo was taken in the same exact place.
